Does Home Air Conditioning Bring in Fresh Air?

Most standard home split air conditioners do not bring fresh air into the room. They draw in indoor air, cool or heat it, then return it to the same space. A cooler room can feel fresher without its air having been replaced.
If you are considering air conditioning because you want to keep windows closed, make two requirements clear before choosing equipment: the temperature you want to control, and how the room will receive fresh air. A quote for one does not automatically include the other.

What are you asking the system to do?
The word “air” appears in several different product features. Start with the outcome you need, rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
| Your requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Make an overheating room cooler | A cooling system selected for the room and its heat gains |
| Bring outside air into an occupied room | An identified ventilation route or equipment with a documented fresh-air function |
| Filter particles from circulating room air | The actual filter specification and its maintenance instructions; filtration alone is not an outside-air supply |
Daikin's explanation of domestic ventilation confirms that most air conditioners circulate indoor air rather than exchange it with outdoor air. Its household examples concern Japan, but that distinction describes how a conventional split system works wherever it is installed.
An outdoor unit does not, by itself, mean the system delivers outside air indoors. In an ordinary split installation, the refrigerant circuit transfers heat between the units; it is not a fresh-air duct. Nor does selecting a stronger fan setting turn recirculation into ventilation.
Are there air conditioners that supply fresh air?
Yes, so “no air conditioner can ventilate” would also be misleading. Some specialist products combine functions. For example, Daikin's UK Ururu Sarara product page explicitly lists ventilation alongside heating and cooling.
Treat that as a reason to check the exact model, not as a recommendation that this particular product suits every home. Ask the installer to identify the outside-air route, its specified supply rate and the conditions under which it operates. A general description such as “air purification” is not confirmation of fresh-air ventilation.
There is also a separate category of ventilation equipment. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, or MVHR, exchanges indoor and outdoor air while recovering heat. Daikin's UK ventilation guide distinguishes this from air conditioning's primary temperature-control role. You should not assume an MVHR proposal includes active summer cooling, or that installing a split system means you must also install MVHR. The appropriate arrangement depends on the home and what is already there.
“I want the bedroom window shut”: a useful survey example
Imagine a bedroom that overheats in summer. Its occupants also want the window shut at night because of road noise. This is an illustrative situation, not a customer project.
The first request is straightforward: assess whether fixed cooling can control the bedroom temperature. But “window shut” is a separate constraint. Before accepting the proposal, the homeowner needs to know how fresh air reaches that room under that condition.
An existing ventilation arrangement might already meet the need. It might need attention, or a separate assessment might be necessary. The answer cannot be established just by choosing a bigger indoor air-conditioning unit.
Write the brief in two parts:
- Cooling: assess this bedroom for comfortable summer use, with the window normally closed at night.
- Ventilation: identify the existing fresh-air route in that operating condition; confirm whether it remains suitable or whether separate advice or work is needed.
Then ask what is included, excluded and still unresolved. This is more useful than a single request for “fresh, cool air”, which can conceal two different expectations.
Once those requirements are clear, our bedroom air-conditioning positioning guide covers the separate decision about where the indoor unit should go.
What happens to windows, vents and extract fans?
Cooling a room does not remove its need for ventilation. Do not seal background vents or switch off an existing ventilation system simply because an air conditioner has been fitted. Follow the ventilation equipment's instructions and have unclear arrangements assessed.
For context, UKHSA's ventilation guidance advises keeping trickle vents unobstructed and maintaining mechanical ventilation according to manufacturers' instructions. That guidance is labelled as applying to England; it is not a statement of Welsh building regulations.
There is no universal window-opening timetable to prescribe from an air-conditioning quote alone. Tell the surveyor whether noise, security or other practical constraints limit opening windows. Ask for an operating explanation that accounts for those constraints and the home's existing ventilation, rather than accepting “keep everything closed” as the whole answer.
Cleaning the air conditioner's filters remains important, but it does not add an outside-air connection. Our home air-conditioning servicing guide explains the separate maintenance responsibilities.
If moisture removal is also part of your brief, see whether air-conditioning dry mode can replace a dehumidifier. That is a separate equipment decision from providing fresh air.
Five questions before accepting a quote
- Does this exact model recirculate room air only, or supply outside air too? Ask for the relevant manufacturer specification if fresh-air supply is claimed.
- How will this room receive fresh air when used as planned? Include whether windows and internal doors will normally be closed.
- What existing ventilation must remain in use? Identify it during the survey rather than assuming the new unit replaces it.
- Is any separate assessment or ventilation work required? Establish who would undertake it and whether it is included in the price.
- What will the handover explain? Request separate instructions for cooling controls, ventilation operation and maintenance of each system involved.
Smart Space Living provides air-conditioning installation across its South Wales service areas. If your room overheats, request a survey and quote, describing both the heat problem and any need to keep windows closed. Make ventilation expectations explicit at the start so you can compare proposals for what they actually deliver.
